First Trip to Camp Perry

I’m back from my first trip to Perry and I’m very glad I made the trip. As I mentioned in my first post I signed up for the afternoon matches for vintage military on friday and John C. Garand on Saturday.

I had trouble with my 1917 which cost me posting a reasonable score. However I made it up on Saturday breaking my personal record by 7 points. I met some great folks and picked up some helpful tips. I’m excited For next year. I am going to try and chase a bronze medal next year.

I’ll do a full AAR in my next post.

July John C. Garand Match

I had a great match this weekend with my Garand. My best match yet with a final score of 230 1X!

My new Creedmoor jacket seemed to help, especially in prone. Off hand seemed much more stable however I struggled with my ear pro as my cheek weld was a bit off with the extra material in my shoulder. This cost me a couple (ok three) misses. However I seem to have gotten the hang of it and I’ll use my low profile ear pro at Camp Perry. Which is quickly approaching!

After about three months I am now the proud owner of a creedmoor hardback. Just in time for camp perry.

I went with the cordura with ventilation and the all position upgrade. To accommodate my short little arms I had 3 inches taken off the sleeves which was the max they would do.

It is going to take some getting used to after so many matches in just a t-shirt. However, it should definitely help me raise my scores a bit, especially in off hand. The downside of course is I won’t be able to blame my equipment for my low scores as now I pretty much have everything I could get.

Just one more match at Kimberton this weekend before I take the drive to camp perry.

June Garand Match

Brought the Garand out for the June match at Kimberton. My elevation seems to be a bit low on slow prone which hurt my overall score. However, I felt good with how I handled the Garand so all in all it was a good match for me.

Hopefully this will me my last match without a jacket. I’m going on week 13 of my 10-12 week wait for the
creedmoor hardback I ordered.

Spending some quality time at the range

As mentioned in the last post my Model 1917 and I haven’t been getting along very well. To try and repair our relationship, I got up early and went out to the range with the 1917, a big box of HXP, and some SR-1s to do a little couples counseling.

80 rounds later I think we have a better understanding. I stuck to prone and did several timed rapid strings which have been a problem for me.

It looks like a big part of my problem was simply having the elevation set too low. A couple clicks up to the 300 yard mark did the trick. I do seem to have a windage issue as you can see many of the shots are trending to the left. For now I am going to hold off with just a bit of black to the left of the front sight.

I also feel better about working the bolt. I have been having trouble with the rear sight folding back and coming dangerously close to having the battle sight crushed by the bolt. I’m trying to get in the habit of watching my “workspace” and the rear sight while I work the bolt. Its hard to “feel”
When this is about to happen due to the force needed to close the cock on closing action .

Sore shoulder aside It was a good day at the range hopefully it will translate to better performance in the next match.
