Re-crowning an M1 Garand

My Winchester Garand had a muzzle erosion of 3 and had a very beat up crown. I ordered I re-crowning tool from midway to try and clean it up a bit.

The first challenge was trying to find a tool that could take a 1/2″ bit. After a tour of several hardware stores I gave up and borrowed an old hand drill which fit.

I put a little bit of light oil (left over hone oil) on the bit and shaved the crown down a bit.

I am pleased with the results the crown looks nice. I may have take more off the end than I probably should have.

Post re-crowning the muzzle erosion has improved to around 2.25 if that improves accuracy or not I will find out on the next trip to the range.

White Oak Service Rifle Range Report

Took the new white oak service rifle out for its first trip to the range.

Needles to say I am very happy with its performance.

This is group is from the bench at a SR-1 target at 100 yards. Today was really just a function test I’ll work on zeroing it next weekend, as you see it will need a couple clicks up.

The Geissele service rifle trigger I installed is just as good as the reviews. Breaks clean and crisp every time.

I’m excited to take her to a match and see what she can do.

White Oak Service Rifle here!

18-20 weeks later the White Oak service rifle upper I ordered has arrived. It will be a couple weeks until I get it built however I am already impressed with its quality clearly a lot of care was taken in building it. Hopefully I’ll get it together in time for a high power match before the end of the year. Of course I will have to man up and learn to shoot sitting.

And here she is all built. Just waiting on a new turner sling.

York Rifleman Fall Garand Match

I brought my Garand to the other side of the Susquehanna to shoot at York Rifleman’s fall JCG match. This was the second time I attended a match here. These folks really run a great match I am glad they decided to have a fall match.

The weather held out it stayed in the mid 60’s with just a very brief drizzle. Much larger turn out as opposed to the spring match. There were 4 relays with 8 positions it was nice to have 2 people on each target in the pits opposed to pulling solo.

I have been really struggling with my prone position. I’m not sure why I have picked up this problem, despite doing some dry fire practice in the hotel the night before. I need more dry firing and more range time. If only I had more time.

Anyway enough about my excuses. Here are some pictures I took at the match.

The issue ammo was lake city 69 but my bandolier was marked 1955. I thought that was neat.

1907 Sling Keeper Placement

I’ve been struggling with my sling and cheek weld in the past few matches. So I did a little dry fire practice in the hotel (I’m sure my neighbors loved that).

I made my sling a little longer so that the upper frog is now in the “10” holes and switched my keepers back to a more traditional set up. One above and one below the upper frog. I had it set up with both keeps below the upper frog.

I feel pretty good about this set up. Now if I screwed up my point of impact… Well I’ll find out tomorrow but the poor cheek weld and sling slack are letting me develop bad habits that lead to inconsistent position and hurting my slow prone.

In case you are interested I use a Turner Saddlery 1907 national match sling. I highly recommend them. I even have one on my hunting rifle.
